Israelis love superstars, big names, big brand names and heroes as much as any other people.
Israelis are the largest producers and breeders of heroes especially after death. The best example is Yitzchak Rabin z”l, a former Prime Minister who was hated or at least disliked by most of the population. As soon as he was cowardly murdered he became a National hero touted as the one who could have saved the country from any danger, the one everyone loved – the one.
Israelis painted him as a saint ignoring all his faults (and he had many). To understand, all you need is to read the newspapers dating back a few months before his murder to learn what Israelis thought of Rabin z”l, including his arch enemy Mr. Shimon Peres.
Israelis have created superstars even in the legal system, as they did with Aaron Barak, a Chief Justice who brought more problems into the legal system than any other. A Chief Justice that became a “god” for some, and the “Devil” to others.
Even on “death issues” Israelis have created superstars like Professor Yehuda Hiss, the “master of Abu Kabir” (the forensic institute of Israel). Hiss was acclaimed as a super duper star, doing anything he wanted while disregarding any divergent opinion; and he did until he was finally ousted for many wrong-doings regarding the use of body parts.
The newest superstar is certainly Mr. Shimon Peres, the President of Israel. Can you imagine Obama acting like Peres? He would be impeached in a blink! No doubt the man is a megalomaniac.
Today Israelis are breading new superstars; new heroes in every field without any thought or consideration for the future or for the collateral damage these supposed “heroes” are inflicting on society.
One of them is the Super Children protector Dr. Yitzhak Kadman from the Israeli National Council for the Child or the Honorable (ex) Judge, Mrs. Rot-Levy appointed by the Ministry of Justice to compile a new codex regarding children’s rights. As if they know better than everyone else or are the only ones to be trusted about children’s rights.
Mr. Yair Lapid (already looking like history in the political arena of 2015) and many others from Israeli radio and TV, have become rising stars not for what they can offer to the problematic Israeli society but for what they are in the so unreal life of actors and celebrities!
When the hero is gone:
Every time a new hero appears bringing a new wave of hope, a new era of destruction comes with him. This was the case of every new political party and will be the fate of the new Lapid party as many others in the last 60 years who came in a fanfare, disappearing in a peculiar unheard voice.
We are somehow blind to the future, we tend not see long term damage and as usual, Israelis are big fans of NOW. Peace now, rights for all now, money for all now, houses for all now, etc.
The real heroes:
We do have real heroes among us with real values and real lives. Who are these real heroes?
These real heroes are those soldiers in the IDF doing the utmost to keep this country safe. The heroes are all these young boys and girls in the different youth movements maintaining high moral standards. Heroes are all those volunteers in hundreds of organizations giving their time, soul and money to make this country a better place.
Heroes are the parents struggling in an anti-parental authority society while trying to give their children the best moral education they can, and tools to handle real life when they become adults.
A Hero is every new immigrant coming to live in Israel without any certainty they can handle the struggle of a new life in a new country under new laws, new language and new mentality.
It is time we stop believing in self-proclaimed and media-fabricated heroes and start appreciating each other while thinking and planning for our future as a nation.
